First-Year

I recently went to a district training meeting for first year teachers. At this meeting, we had to come up with a simile to describe the experience of being a first year teacher. Here are some of the similes that were shared:

Your first-year of teaching is like....

  • being on a roller coaster with a broken lap bar.
  • finding yourself drowning in a lake only to have someone throw 99 babies into the lake and telling you it's your job to save them.
  • working as a waitress at a restaurant where no one is hungry or even wants to be there.
  • traveling through a pitch-black tunnel which is occasionally lighted by dim candlelight.
I am sure that by the end of the year I will be able to create some more positive similes, but for right now I feel a little bit like the drowning lady. :)
